Principles of Mindful Eating – Slow Down Tune In

November 1, 2018. By Jeff Wolfsberg

I am so guilty of this myself, it’s racing through my meal!  Mindfulness is the idea of being present in anything you are doing. I’ve brought mindfulness to my eating and it has done wonders for not only my digestion, but the amount of food I’m eating when I give my body time to send the appropriate signals about being full.  Here are a few tips about mindful eating.  If you are up for the challenge, try putting your fork down in between bites of your food when dining.  In between those bites, be present either to your own body signals or present to those you are with.  You’ll find that you’ll eat less, digest better, and those you eat with will be grateful for your devoted attention.

  • Allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing opportunities that are available through food preparation and consumption by respecting your own inner wisdom.
  • Choosing to eat food that is both pleasing to you and nourishing to your body by using all your senses to explore, savor and taste.
  • Acknowledging responses to food (likes, neutral, dislikes) without judgement.
  • Learning to be aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decision to begin eating and to stop eating.
